Celebrating Women Changemakers

My name is  Ruth Shaber, MD.  I am a physician, philanthropist, investor and a board member and friend of Women of the World Endowment.  In honor of my beloved mother, Sandra Shaber,  I am donating to the Urgent Response Fund, an organization addressing recent global challenges.

I grew up in an upper middle class home in a suburb of Philadelphia. My father was a physician and my mother taught economics at a local public high school.  When I was in grade school, my mother made the courageous decision to go back to school to get her PhD.  Her grueling studies were punctuated with stories of discrimination and condescension as she was the only woman in her program.  This experience toughened her and drove her ambition.  Ultimately as a successful consultant and prominent economist, she made a lot more money than my father and she would proudly take me to the bank when she deposited her paychecks. Both my parents were feminists and unlike any other family I knew, each of their professional careers were equally valued by the other.  Even in the 60’s and 70’s and long before it was fashionable, my parents truly shared equally in household chores, child raising and various sacrifices for one another’s careers. Both parents instilled in me the importance for women to be financially independent and told tales of couples they knew who divorced – only to leave the wife frightened and without resources.  I will be forever grateful to my parents Sandra and Gary Shaber for demonstrating what women’s power and resilience looks like.

Women of the World Endowment is an investment non-profit focused on centralizing women as economic, environmental, and social changemakers while delivering market-rate, risk-adjusted returns and impact at scale. Every day, WoWE invests in, advances, and amplifies women changemakers. We thank Ruth, the WoWE community, and everyone who celebrates women changemakers.

Women’s leadership on the frontlines of our homes, healthcare, businesses, and country leadership has been exceptional in the context of the accelerating challenges the world faces, while at the same time testing women as they have borne the brunt of lay-offs, childcare, and more.  We can collectively acknowledge that we ALL stand on the shoulders of Women Changemakers.

During Women’s History Month we are taking a personal approach to celebrating the rich contributions of women in our lives, communities, and economies. We hope you will join us in honoring the women who have made it possible to be the change we want to see in the world –  those we work with, those who inspire us, and those who have championed our success.

Throughout the month we will continue to share stories and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of women changemakers who have and continue to effect lasting positive change.  If you would like to share your story and the organizations you are donating to with the WoWE community please send a note to Jennifer Brooker and we will amplify.
