Women’s History Month

Celebrating Women Changemakers in our Lives, Communities, and Organizations

Celebrating Women Changemakers

My name is Malia Xie. I am a research analyst intern at Women of the World Endowment. This Women’s History Month, I am honoring my mom, Karen Orteza and donating in her name to the National Domestic Workers Alliance to further their work organizing and supporting the millions of domestic workers (91.5% of domestic workers are women, mostly immigrants and women of color) who provide care for our loved ones and make all other work possible.

My mother is an adventurer, educator, and community builder. Growing up in Ohio her whole childhood, she moved to Germany then China as soon as she finished school. Despite the 1985 restrictions on foreigners, she fearlessly explored the country, fell in love, and found a new family.

Years later, she moved back to China with three young children in tow. When we moved to China, both the expat community and our school were tiny. She made the school’s first yearbook (and almost every yearbook since); founded the PTA, boy scouts, and girl scouts; and even started the school library using our family books. On the weekends, she would host impromptu block parties for the entire school to attend. When I was born, she quit her job as a teacher and opened an unofficial free daycare in our home for several families that needed childcare. She has since returned to the classroom and has educated hundreds of children from all over the world.

Even though there is plenty of data demonstrating the importance of early childhood education, I think it is still important to acknowledge the love, talent, patience, and creativity this work demands. We all benefit from supportive and tight-knit communities and building these communities takes vision, passion, and persistence. This Women’s History Month let’s remember to celebrate the women (and everyone else!) who pour their energy and heart into building up others and the communities around them.

Women of the World Endowment is an investment non-profit focused on centralizing women as economic, environmental, and social changemakers while delivering market-rate, risk-adjusted returns and impact at scale. Every day, WoWE invests in, advances, and amplifies women changemakers. We thank Malia, the WoWE community, and everyone who celebrates women changemakers.

Women’s leadership on the frontlines of our homes, healthcare, businesses, and country leadership has been exceptional in the context of the accelerating challenges the world faces, while at the same time testing women as they have borne the brunt of lay-offs, childcare, and more.  We can collectively acknowledge that we ALL stand on the shoulders of Women Changemakers.

During Women’s History Month we are taking a personal approach to celebrating the rich contributions of women in our lives, communities, and economies. We hope you will join us in honoring the women who have made it possible to be the change we want to see in the world –  those we work with, those who inspire us, and those who have championed our success.

Throughout the month we will continue to share stories and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of women changemakers who have and continue to effect lasting positive change.  If you would like to share your story and the organizations you are donating to with the WoWE community please send a note to Jennifer Brooker and we will amplify.
