Celebrating Women Changemakers

My name is Kenroy Dowers. I am a national of Trinidad and Tobago, an entrepreneur and an investor focused on impact investing in emerging markets. I am also a friend of the Women of the World Endowment and support its remarkable mission and agenda.  In honor of our beloved mother, Ms. Eileen Violet Dowers, I am donating to Caritas Vienna, an on-the-ground organization that responds to emergencies, promotes development, and advocates for a fair and just world.

I chose to write about my mother because her wisdom, faith, and commitment have transformed and influenced a generation. My mother, a descendant of the Garifuna community  was born in St. Vincent, a small island in the Caribbean just north of Barbados. Her childhood in the 1950s focused on farming and agriculture given the limited education opportunities at the time, especially for a woman in the 1950s in St Vincent. Her journey took her through Trinidad and Tobago and eventually Canada. She was heralded as a pillar in her community, who prioritized faith, education, and healthy living. As a demonstration of this, with little less than a high school education in St Vincent, she concluded an undergrad and master’s degree after the age of 60. Through her parentage and guidance, she has molded many careers and sponsored scholarships in her hometowns in St Vincent and in Trinidad and Tobago.

The legacy of this regal early farmer from St Vincent has generated international bankers, university professors, entrepreneurs, an artist, an Olympic gymnast, a medical doctor, authors, and a music producer. I count my mother as a unique and truly transformative leader. Above all, her commitment to education has been the catalyst for transformative change in her family and community. I honor her today as a changemaker.

Women of the World Endowment is an investment non-profit focused on centralizing women as economic, environmental, and social changemakers while delivering market-rate, risk-adjusted returns and impact at scale. Every day, WoWE invests in, advances, and amplifies women changemakers. We thank Kenroy, the WoWE community, and everyone who celebrates women changemakers.

Women’s leadership on the frontlines of our homes, healthcare, businesses, and country leadership has been exceptional in the context of the accelerating challenges the world faces, while at the same time testing women as they have borne the brunt of lay-offs, childcare, and more.  We can collectively acknowledge that we ALL stand on the shoulders of Women Changemakers.

During Women’s History Month we are taking a personal approach to celebrating the rich contributions of women in our lives, communities, and economies. We hope you will join us in honoring the women who have made it possible to be the change we want to see in the world –  those we work with, those who inspire us, and those who have championed our success.

Throughout the month we will continue to share stories and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of women changemakers who have and continue to effect lasting positive change.  If you would like to share your story and the organizations you are donating to with the WoWE community please send a note to Jennifer Brooker and we will amplify.
