Celebrating Women Changemakers in our Lives, Communities, and Organizations

Celebrating Women Changemakers

My name is Danielle Burt and I am an advisor to, and friend of, Women of the World Endowment. This Women’s History Month, I honor the village of women – past and present – who have helped shape my own story.

My Abuela and me

I honor the women in my family. My mother, Vivian, emigrated to the US from Cuba as a teenager. Despite being a single mother of three, she earned her college degree as an adult and taught me about hard work and sacrifice. My mother’s mother, Marina (or, Abuela, as I called her), did everything she could for us including preparing nearly every meal; she taught me the depths of love.  My stepmother, Gerri, battled cancer for decades and yet lived life more fully than anyone I’ve ever known; she taught me the importance of now. My sister, Michelle, is the best mother, life partner and human being I know; she still teaches me how sisterhood is in a league of its own.

I honor my women colleagues. Those blazing trails, those leading from the heart, those exercising their compassion rather than their power, those committed to continuous learning, those keeping things honest and real; those getting things done.

I honor my women friends. The bestie, Juliette, who remains my life’s truest soulmate. The friends of old who personify loyalty. And the many circles – of expats, of peers at former employers, of business school classmates, of local pasatiempo pals – who I can turn to for support, always and in all ways.

And, right now, I honor the many women of Ukraine who are having to endure unspeakable trauma, to carry their families and lives into unknown futures, and to hang onto love and hope anyway. I will continue to donate my time and resources to local grassroots efforts that support them. The efforts of organizations like UNFPA are a great place to donate, as they remain committed to women and girls impacted by the war in Ukraine.

It takes a village, indeed, and I’m encouraged by the village of women around me – and globally – that continue to show up for each other.

Women of the World Endowment is an investment non-profit focused on centralizing women as economic, environmental, and social changemakers while delivering market-rate, risk-adjusted returns and impact at scale. Every day, WoWE invests in, advances, and amplifies women changemakers. We thank Danielle, the WoWE community, and everyone who celebrates women changemakers.

Women’s leadership on the frontlines of our homes, healthcare, businesses, and country leadership has been exceptional in the context of the accelerating challenges the world faces, while at the same time testing women as they have borne the brunt of lay-offs, childcare, and more.  We can collectively acknowledge that we ALL stand on the shoulders of Women Changemakers.

During Women’s History Month we are taking a personal approach to celebrating the rich contributions of women in our lives, communities, and economies. We hope you will join us in honoring the women who have made it possible to be the change we want to see in the world –  those we work with, those who inspire us, and those who have championed our success.

Throughout the month we will continue to share stories and celebrate the extraordinary contributions of women changemakers who have and continue to effect lasting positive change.  If you would like to share your story and the organizations you are donating to with the WoWE community please send a note to Jennifer Brooker and we will amplify.
